CANYON COUNTY ANNOUNCES ONE-DAY LANDFILL FEE WAIVER FOR COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP

CALDWELL, ID — The Canyon County Board of Commissioners has approved a one-day waiver of landfill fees for residents as part of a countywide community clean-up effort.

On Saturday, April 25, 2026, Canyon County residents will be able to dispose of residential clean-up waste at the Pickles Butte Landfill at no cost, up to one ton per household. This initiative is intended to support community-wide efforts to improve neighborhoods and promote responsible waste disposal.

Residents bringing more than one ton of waste will be charged standard landfill rates for the excess amount. The fee waiver applies to residential clean-up waste only.

In addition to individual drop-offs, cities within Canyon County may participate by providing community collection bins. These materials may be delivered to the landfill following the clean-up event, in accordance with county guidelines.

Additional guidelines include:

  • Up to four passenger vehicle or light truck tires per household will be accepted at no charge; additional tires will be subject to standard fees.
  • Commercial waste and materials delivered by commercial haulers will be subject to regular landfill fees unless part of an approved community clean-up effort.
  • Residents are encouraged to separate materials such as wood, metal, tires, and appliances to ensure proper disposal and recycling.

“This annual clean-up effort is an opportunity for residents to take pride in their communities while responsibly disposing of unwanted materials,” said Canyon County Landfill Director Dave Loper.

The fee waiver applies to Canyon County residents only and is only valid for April 25th 2026.

CALDWELL, ID — One of Canyon County’s longest-serving commissioners, Leslie Van Beek, announced today that she will not seek re-election and will retire at the conclusion of her current term in December.

Van Beek was first elected in 2019 as District 1 Commissioner and has served nearly eight years in office. Reflecting on her tenure, she described her time in public service as adventurous, rewarding, and at times challenging, but ultimately deeply fulfilling.

Van Beek credited her faith for guiding her leadership throughout her time in office and expressed sincere appreciation to her colleagues and to the residents of Canyon County who supported her commitment to good governance and transparency.
She shared that she hopes to be remembered as “The People’s Commissioner” rather than as a politician, someone who led with integrity, warmth, and attention to detail, and who cared deeply about the priorities of the people she represented.
Following her retirement, Van Beek plans to spend more time with family and to enjoy all that Idaho and the Treasure Valley have to offer.

CANYON COUNTY AND PARTNERING CITIES SECURE CONTINUED ANIMAL SHELTER SERVICES WITH WEST VALLEY HUMAN SOCIETY UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30, 2026

CALDWELL, ID — Canyon County, in coordination with the City of Nampa and City of Caldwell, announces that West Valley Humane Society (WVHS) will continue providing animal sheltering and related services throughout the remainder of Fiscal Year 2026 (Sep. 30th, 2026). Services will remain at the current contracted amount, which represents a combined 400% increase in funding from all participating entities compared to the prior year.

This decision comes after recent discussions regarding the transition of services to Copper Quill Haven (CQH). After CQH backed out from negotiations on February 9, 2026, the County and cities agreed that maintaining continuity of services with WVHS is in the best interest of the community and the animals served for right now. The County and participating Cities are committed to humane and compassionate practices and are working diligently to ensure the well-being of the animals and expectations from the community are met.

Beginning in March 2026, the entities will schedule and host monthly coordination meetings with WVHS. These meetings are intended to support collaborative, community-focused discussions addressing both short- and long-term solutions to improve animal welfare services throughout the county.

Canyon County appreciates WVHS’s willingness to continue this partnership through FY2026. The Board of County Commissioners, City of Nampa, and City of Caldwell are committed to working in good faith with each other and non-government partners to ensure animal welfare services remain stable, responsive, and adaptable to the unprecedented growth occurring county-wide.

Further updates will be provided as discussions continue.

CANYON COUNTY, CITY OF NAMPA, AND CITY OF CALDWELL RESPONSE TO COPPER QUILL HAVENS NOTICE TO STEP DOWN FROM SHELTER SERVICES

Caldwell, ID- Last year, Canyon County, in partnership with the Cities of Caldwell and Nampa, conducted a competitive bidding process in response to increasing costs for animal shelter services. The process was designed to ensure responsible use of public funds while increasing the standards of animal care and public safety.

Following the completion of the Request for Proposal (RFP) process in December, Copper Quill Haven (CQH) was selected as the applicant best suited to operate shelter services. Since that selection, the agencies have been collaborating closely on final contract negotiations. They anticipated finalizing the agreement at a meeting scheduled for this morning, where they were prepared to accept the key terms proposed by CQH and advance the contract to their respective governing bodies for approval. Prior to the meeting, Copper Quill Haven informed Canyon County of its decision to withdraw from further negotiations and cease pursuit of the contract.

Our community depends on reliable animal shelter services. Canyon County, along with the Cities of Caldwell and Nampa, is working diligently to ensure continuity of services while evaluating available options to determine the best long-term solution.

After all entities received notice that CQH had ceased negotiations, the purpose of the scheduled meeting shifted to developing a path forward that prioritizes animal welfare and the needs of the community. Concluding this meeting the Board of County Commissioners and representatives from the Cities of Caldwell and Nampa agreed to meet again as soon as possible to discuss the next steps and explore viable paths moving forward. In the meantime, the facility will continue to be available for law enforcement agencies, but expanded services to the general public are paused until a long-term solution can be identified.

All entities remain committed to acting in good faith and to finding a responsible, sustainable solution that balances animal welfare, public safety, and fiscal responsibility. Most importantly, we are united in our commitment to achieving outcomes that benefit the animals in our community and the residents we serve.

CANYON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS MEET WITH OKLAND CONSTRUCTION FOR SHERIFF’S ADMINISTRATION BUILDING UPDATE QUARTER 4

CALDWELL, ID — On January 30, 2026, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) met with Okland Construction for a quarter-four update on the Sheriff’s Administration Building located on Albany Street between 12th and 13th Avenue.

The project has reached several major milestones. These include completion of the remaining roofing, installation of standard cement paneling, ongoing window installation and testing, re-asphalting of 12th Street, and the addition of bulb-outs at crosswalks. Albany Street has also been brought up to grade for future use. Crews have also installed all heating and air-conditioning units on the roof and completed tile work on levels two and three of the building.

The exterior of the building is now fully wrapped, with most of the air-barrier installation complete. This progress allows crews to move forward with interior finishes without weather-related delays.

The project timeline was extended by 50 days to accommodate additional items, including asphalting the parking lot across the street from the Sheriff’s Administration Building, currently a mix of asphalt and dirt, and Okland’s completion of the building’s audio-visual build-out. Funding for these additions is anticipated to come from project contingency funds and will not result in additional costs.

Currently, the project continues to move steadily toward completion. Even with the added scope, the contractor is still targeting a Spring 2026 completion date, in line with the original contract. This project is funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), part of the $1.9 trillion federal stimulus package passed in 2021.

“It’s been great working with Okland on this project; they have done a fantastic job,” said Rick Britton, Public Works Director for Canyon County.

As construction enters its final stretch, the Sheriff’s Administration Building is taking shape as a modern, efficient facility that will serve Canyon County residents for years to come.
