CANYON COUNTY BREAKS GROUND ON NEW ELECTIONS BUILDING
CALDWELL, ID — The Board of Canyon County Commissioners marked a significant milestone today with the groundbreaking ceremony for the upcoming Canyon County Elections Building, a $4.7 million project that was funded by federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
The ceremony, attended by key stakeholders and community members, heralded the commencement of construction on the 16,500-square-foot facility, slated for completion in late 2024 or early 2025.
The new elections building aims to address the pressing needs of the County’s burgeoning population and provide essential upgrades to the current Elections office.
Canyon County Clerk Rick Hogaboam emphasized the County’s status as the second largest in the state and one of the nation’s fastest-growing communities. He also highlighted the challenges with the current elections facility in accommodating vital functions like in-person training and early voting, which are two areas the new facility should accommodate.
“The right to vote is a constitutional bedrock,” Hogaboam asserted, underlining the pivotal role of secure elections in upholding democratic principles. He expressed gratitude to all those who supported the project, signaling a step forward in safeguarding the electoral process.
Rick Britton, Director of Facilities, underscored the collaborative effort behind the project, acknowledging the backing of Commissioners, the Clerk’s office, and the election staff.
Britton outlined the timeline for construction, anticipating groundbreaking next week and completion by late December or early January. The new facility boasts nearly quadruple the space of the current election’s office and is set to enhance services for voters and streamline election operations.
Commissioner Leslie Van Beek hailed the groundbreaking as a testament to the fruitful partnership between the County Commissioners, the Clerk’s office, and various stakeholders. Recognizing the contributions of individuals and organizations involved, Van Beek lauded the commitment to good governance and citizen welfare exemplified by the new building.
“This is a great day of celebration… It is also a reflection of the functional and collaborative partnership,” Commissioner Van Beek said. “This building embodies the essence of good government. Putting dollars to work for the benefit of the people.”
As the ceremony concluded, Hogaboam expressed gratitude to attendees, recognizing the efforts of the elections team and anticipating enhanced collaboration with other county departments in the new location.
