SHERIFF'S OFFICEThe Canyon County Driver’s License Office offers Driver’s License (including I.D. Cards and Permits), Concealed Weapon Permit, Sex Offender Registration, and Fingerprinting services.
We strongly recommend that you schedule an appointment as Driver’s License walk-in wait times vary, often reaching 1-4 hours. Click on the link below to book your appointment. If you choose not to make an appointment or there are no available appointments that fit your needs, you have the option of obtaining a walk-in ticket. Walk-ins will be required to wait in your vehicle or outside until your text notification when it gets close to your turn. Those who have checked in with an appointment will take priority over waiting walk-in tickets. If you are not able to, or not willing to wait outside for an extended time, please schedule an appointment.

The Driver’s License Unit provides the following services: Driver’s Licenses, Sex Offender Registration, Concealed Weapons Permits, Fingerprinting
Documentation Required for Identification Cards, Permits, and Licenses
Drivers training permit 14 ½ to 17 years old The following is the procedure and document requirements for obtaining a driver’s training permit.You must decide and provide the examiner the name of the driver training school the student will attend, either a high school or a commercial driver training program.
The parent must bring the student to the driver’s license office with the following documents;
- The student’s certified birth certificate
- High school yearbook photo or high school ID card
- Social Security card (or number)
- Verification of Compliance form obtained from the student’s school administration.
The parent must have a current ID, driver’s license or valid passport to sign the liability form. Step parents or other legal guardian must provide court appointed guardianship papers or a Power of Attorney document. The cost for the permit is $21.50.
Upon the student’s completion of the driver training program, the process is as follows; If the student is under the age of 17, a parent or legal guardian must accompany the student to the driver’s license office to sign a form stating the student has driven with a parent for a period of 6 months. If someone other than a parent or legal guardian is accompany the child, that person must possess a completed ITD Power of Attorney form signed by the parent or guardian in order to sign for the child’s completion of driving hours. The form is available online HERE. The student takes the written test for a class D license. The written test is only offered between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. You must be called to the examiners station by 3:00 to take the test that day. The fee for the test is $5.00.
If the student passes the test, the Examiner will provide you with a list of road skills testers. An appointment needs to be made with one of them to complete the road skills test. A state skills test fee of $6.50 must be paid at the driver’s license office prior to taking the skills test. The fee for the road test is up to $28.50 which will be collected by the tester. Upon completion of the road skills test the student will return to our office with a sealed envelope from the road skills tester. The student will be issued a driver’s license. The fee for the driver license depending on their age, is between $20 and $30.
First time driver’s license age 17 The parent must bring the minor to the driver’s license office with the following documents;
- The minor’s certified birth certificate
- High school yearbook photo or high school ID card
- Social Security card (or number)
- Verification of Compliance form obtained from the minor’s school administration.

First time driver’s license over the age of 18
The following are the required documents to obtain a first time Idaho driver’s license.
- Any driver’s license or identification card issued by any state.
- Certified copy of your birth certificate
- Your social security card or number
- A qualifying photo such as a student activity card, yearbook photo, state ID, passport, or a photo transcript provided by a school administration
- Proof of Idaho residency such as mortgage papers, rental agreement, utility bill, medical bill, bank statement, or pay stub.

First time identification card over the age of 18
The following are the required documents to obtain a first time Idaho ID card.

If you are transferring your Driver’s License or ID Card from ANY state or territory, you are now REQUIRED to provide proof of Lawful Presence in the United States (see documents below).
- Certified state issued Birth Certificate *If your name has changed since birth due to marriage, divorce or legal name change you must also provide all documents required to link your birth name to your current name such as;
– Marriage license(s) (Recorded or certified copy)
– Divorce decree(s) (Court certified copy)
– Name change judgement (Court certified copy)
- OR Other required lawful presence / immigration documents
You must also provide:
- Your out of state driver’s license / ID card / acceptable official photo (as applicable)
- Social Security Card or Number
- One printed proof of Idaho residency document, or two documents from two different entities for a Star Card. It must contain your first and last legal name and current Idaho physical address. We will not accept any document on your cell phone. IT MUST BE IN PRINTED PAPER FORM.
Acceptable proof of Idaho residency documents:

- Utility bill (dated within one year)
- Medical bill (dated within one year)
- Pay stub (dated within one year)
- Bank or Credit Card statement(dated within one year) (check book not accepted)
- Idaho-based vehicle insurance documents (not expired)
- Lease/Rental agreement (dated within one year)
- School enrollment record (dated within one year)
- Postal Change of Address (Must be full page Postal form with first & last name) (dated within one year)
- If living in temporary housing such as a shelter or group home you must provide a letter from the facility on their letterhead verifying that you are living at that address.
- If you are absolutely unable to provide one of the above documents and you are currently living with someone who holds an Idaho driver’s license or ID card, the following may be
done; That person must appear before the examiner with you and sign an affidavit stating you live with them at their given address. - No Auto registration documents accepted.
The applicant must take and pass the written knowledge test for a Class D license. The fee for the written knowledge test is $5. The written knowledge test is only offered between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. You must be called to the examiners station by 3:00 PM to take the test that day. Class A
Combined gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 lbs or greater, as well as towing 10,000 lbs or more. Required Tests: General Knowledge, Combinations, Air Brakes (not all Class A vehicles requires this, however, to prevent a restriction for non-air brake vehicles only, a skills test must be completed in a vehicle with air brakes). Skills test in a vehicle that meets the requirements stated above. If the skills test vehicle has air brakes, you must have completed the Knowledge air brake exam. Available endorsements: Tankers, Doubles Triples, **Hazardous Materials
Class B
Combined gross vehicle weight of 26,000 lbs or greater as well as NOT towing more than 10,000 lbs. (Common) Required Tests: General Knowledge, Air Brakes (not all Class B vehicles requires this, however, to prevent a restriction for non-air brake vehicles only, a skills test must be completed in a vehicle with air brakes) Skills test in a vehicle that meets the requirements state above. Class C
Combined gross vehicle weight rating less than 26,000 lbs. As well as any vehicle that carries 16 or more people, including the driver, and/or any vehicle that requires hazardous material placards. Class D
Any vehicle with a combined gross vehicle weight rating less than 26,000 lbs, except for motorcycles Required tests: Class D Exam Skills test in a vehicle that meets the requirements stated above Available endorsements: Motorcycle* *To obtain a Motorcycle Endorsement both a knowledge test and a skills test is required. The Skills test can be completed by one of the certified skills testers and/or the State recognized motorcycle safety program STARS. **Hazardous Materials endorsement requires completion of a TSA background check as well as the written exam. background check as well as the written exam.
