Jan. 10, 2025, marked an exciting chapter for Canyon County with the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Canyon County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Administration Building, a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the needs of one of Idaho’s fastest-growing communities.

Funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), this $27.61 million, 82,866-square-foot project will consolidate all Sheriff’s Office operations under one roof. Sheriff Kieran Donahue expressed his gratitude for the federal funding, calling it “a gift at exactly the right time” as the county continues to experience rapid population growth.

A Modern Facility for Public Safety
The three-story building, located along Albany Street between 12th and 13th Avenues, provides a necessary investment in the future of CCSO and offers adequate space and facilities for the next 20-30 years of growth. The new Administration Building will serve as the central hub for CCSO’s wide-ranging operations, with an efficient design for public access that includes all of the high community engagement functions on the first floor. Additional features of the building include:

  • New Emergency Operations Center for all of Canyon County
  • Classroom and training facilities
  • New dispatch center
  • New and more easily accessible records division
  • Expanded and updated facilities for all CCSO divisions
  • Pretrial and alternative sentencing services (currently located in the Dale Haile Detention Center)
  • Secured parking area

The building also includes 4,500 square feet of unfinished space on the third floor, allowing for future expansion to accommodate the county’s continued growth. Construction is expected to begin in January 2025, with completion anticipated in the spring of 2026.

“This building is a critical investment in the safety and security of Canyon County residents,” said Sheriff Donahue. “It represents months of collaboration between the Sheriff’s Office, the Board of County Commissioners, our Facilities Director, and trusted local partners like Hummel Architects and Okland Construction.”

Strategic Use of Federal Funds
More than 90% of the project is funded through ARPA, part of a $1.9 trillion federal stimulus package passed in 2021. Canyon County allocated the funds to address infrastructure needs without increasing property taxes, with the Sheriff’s building as one of several high-priority projects.

“Our Commissioners have made thoughtful decisions to maximize the benefits of these funds,” added Sheriff Donahue.  “This facility will address our needs for decades to come while allowing other county offices space to grow as well.”

Commissioner Leslie Van Beek highlighted the importance of investing in infrastructure that supports public safety and efficiency. “This building isn’t just about bricks and mortar—it’s about ensuring the people of Canyon County receive the services they deserve, now and into the future.”

A Symbol of Collaboration
Rick Britton, Canyon County’s Facilities Director, lauded the teamwork behind the project, noting that the building reflects the shared vision of the Commissioners and the Sheriff’s Office.

“This facility was designed with efficiency and community accessibility in mind,” said Britton. “It’s a tangible representation of our commitment to the safety and well-being of Canyon County residents.”

While the ARPA funds were insufficient to address the county’s jail capacity challenges, Donahue emphasized that the Commissioners have strategically prioritized critical infrastructure projects. “The need for a new jail remains a pressing issue, but this Administration Building represents a significant step forward in serving our community,” he said.

Parking and Accessibility
To accommodate construction, parking arrangements for staff and visitors will be adjusted starting in January. New parking areas east of Boise Avenue will be available for use, with detailed maps and guidance provided to county employees.

The groundbreaking ceremony underscores the county’s commitment to meeting the demands of a rapidly growing population while maintaining fiscal responsibility. The new CCSO Administration Building is not only an investment in public safety but also a reflection of the collaboration and vision that define Canyon County’s leadership.
